# Pricing Rules

> Set up rules that price your inventory for you — based on how old it is, how it is selling, what the market is asking, and what you paid.

Set up rules that price your inventory for you — based on how old it is, how it is selling, what the market is asking, and what you paid.

**Where to find it:** [Open Pricing Rules in AIM](https://aimventory.com/pricing-rules) — you will be asked to sign in first.

## What you can do here

* Price by a formula instead of by hand, e.g. "match the lowest market ask, minus 3%"
* Discount stock that has been sitting, without going below what you paid
* React to how something is selling: sell-through rate, days listed, days since the last price change
* Set a payout instead of a price, so you control what actually lands in your pocket
* Preview the new prices before anything changes, then push them to Shopify

## Buttons, fields, and controls

| Control | Where | What it does | When to use it |

| Conditions | Rule editor | The "when this is true" part. Includes inventory age, available and ready-to-list quantity, 30/60/90-day sales counts, sell-through rate, margin, price versus retail, price versus market, StockX and GOAT lowest ask and highest bid, and your average or oldest (FIFO) cost. | Describe the situation you want to react to, such as "sitting more than 90 days and barely selling". |
| Actions | Rule editor | What the rule does to the price: Set Tier Price, Adjust Tier Price, Copy Tier Price, Set Payout, Set Payout from Cost, and Sync to Shopify. | Use "Adjust" for a percentage move off the current price, and "Set" when you want an exact number. |
| Ceiling Payout / Floor Payout | Rule editor conditions | The most and the least you are willing to take home on a sale. | Set a floor on every discounting rule. It is what stops a markdown rule from selling below cost. |
| Preview | Pricing Rules page | Shows which items the rule would reprice and what the new price would be, without changing anything. | Always, before running a rule for the first time. |
| Priority | Rules table column | Decides which rule wins when two rules want to price the same item. Lower numbers run first. | Give your protective rules (floors, do-not-discount) the lowest numbers. |
| Status (Active / Inactive) | Rules table column | Switches a rule on or off without deleting it. | Switch off before a big sale or a market swing rather than deleting your setup. |

## How to: Discount stock that has been sitting too long

1. Create a rule named something obvious, such as "Age discount 90+ days".
2. Add the condition "Oldest Inventory Age" is greater than 90.
3. Add a second condition "30-Day Sales Count" is less than 1, so you only discount what is not moving.
4. Add the action "Adjust Tier Price" by -10%.
5. Add a "Floor Payout" condition so the discount can never take you below what you paid.
6. Preview it. Read the list of items and their new prices before you run it.

<Tip title="Real-world example">
  A pair bought at $180 and listed at $240 for 120 days drops to $216, and stops there because the floor payout is set at $190.
</Tip>

## How to: Follow the market instead of guessing

1. Create a rule and add the condition "Minimum Market Ask" is greater than 0, so it only applies where you have market data.
2. Add the action "Set Payout" or "Set Tier Price" based on the market ask.
3. Decide how far under the market you want to sit, and set the percentage.
4. Preview, check a handful of well-known models by eye, then run it.

<Tip title="Real-world example">
  The lowest market ask on a Dunk Low Panda is $118, and your rule prices it at $114 — just under, without a race to the bottom.
</Tip>

## How to: Protect yourself from an over-aggressive rule

1. Open the rule that is discounting too hard.
2. Add a "Floor Payout" condition, set to the least you will accept.
3. If you also want a ceiling, add "Ceiling Payout".
4. Lower the rule's Priority number so it runs before broader rules.
5. Preview again and confirm no item falls below your floor.

<Tip title="Real-world example">
  Two discount rules were both firing on the same pair and stacking, so it dropped 20% instead of 10%. A floor payout stops the second one from mattering.
</Tip>

## Good to know

* Every discounting rule should have a floor. It is the one setting that turns an aggressive rule from dangerous into safe.
* Pricing rules set prices. Product Rules set up tags and product details; Listing Rules decide where things get listed.
* Preview costs nothing and changes nothing. Read the new prices for a few products you know well before running the rule on everything.
* Lower priority numbers run first, so protective rules should have the lowest numbers.
